Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
