Conservative reactions to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive redactions portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the censorship procedure.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Release
But, some conservative pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But some are not, including prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, enabled some rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding these files for months only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal forever. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall discourse on the political right was relatively muted after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a bill requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given physical folders of files that included no previously unseen information.
