Our Premier Record of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Top Spot.

Initially, this album might appear closer to a challenging scholarly examination rather than a new pop project from a musician whose previous hit featured a global K-pop icon. Divided across 4 distinct movements and performed in 13 tongues, it is a dizzying symphonic opus exploring feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and bodily transformation, often by way of the lens of different women saints. The end of a relationship—a theme treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched skyward on this record, carried by the constant presence of a full orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within an extensive roll call of contributors. Its sheer ambition by itself renders the work of other artists seem rather small.

Transcending Academic Pretense

That this album manages to transcend dry academic posturing feels almost miraculous, with sole credit going to Rosalía. While it's not her first project to alchemize historical sounds with modern styles, the stakes are much higher here, and the tightrope walk far more dramatic. The element that really elevates this fourth release, beyond its complex melodies, dense arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is a core sense of fun. Much like the legendary artist at her height, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's voice that pulls the listener into its whirlwind. Even when she's breaking hearts apart, the listener still desire to be alongside her through the ride.

A Signature Example of Joy

That playful energy comes forth brightly during a stunning Italian song about a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over more than four minutes. Suddenly, all the music falls away, to reveal we hear a spontaneous giggle and a declaration before a comically exaggerated string crescendo crashes in like comedic impact. The track then segues to the frenetic single driven by racing orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The charm with Lux lies in you never exactly know—nor want to predict—where it is going next."

Nearly every song ends in a totally distinct place than how it started. A track examines the transient trappings of fame with a delicate symphony before disintegrating in electronic chaos. Another, a cut that recalls the artist's previous rhythmic style starts off dark and brooding, with prowling beats, until fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to smooth its rough corners.

The Balance Between Art and Pop

Another crucial balancing act of the album involves navigating the line between bold innovation and broad appeal. It is no coincidence that the album has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to break into the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a suite of utterly undeniable hits. A song performed primarily in the English language builds around a chorus that feels to gather more and more infectious hooks as it spins upward. This feat gets repeated on another expansive track that grows and contracts, weaving layered melodies like an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused song seduces with its playful, theatrical drama and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with cultural honesty of other heartbreak anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner described as an "emotional bully".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, like a storybook character concealing a blade: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Ears

Lux is popular music on a grand level, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry amid of impending artificial sameness. It eschews solipsism for sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that skillfully controls its own inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep well of buried treasure that takes patience to fully mine but doesn't seem like hard work. While other major releases of the year felt like feasting on scraps, this record is a sumptuous banquet at which the characters around the table, some tipsy on sacred drink, flutter between discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about hopeless men. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from music's truly endlessly creative visionary.
